Well, there has been quite a bit of local activity amateur radio related of late. A group of locals went up Mt Panorama the other day for a BBQ and some field portable work. Had some good contacts, including with me whilst I am in Antarctica as VK0BP. I am glad there is still fun with field portable.
Additonal to that field portable work, a number of locals had some fun with the 80m Tran Tasman last weekend, including Ingrid VK2FLWR. Congrats on your first contest - look forward to hearing you on the air for more.
For more information about some of the Central West Amateur Projects pop Markus VK2SK an email at

Well I have finally done it.... I sat the advance theory today and passed - yippee :)
I will have to keep you posted on what the new callsign will be, hopefully it will not take too long and there is a suitable callsign for me to acquire :)
A big thanks to VK2UX, VK2DC and VK2PJZ for conducting the exam for me. |

APRS has recently come alive in Central Western NSW. Kim VK2ASY has been a big factor with this activity in APRS and I would like to extend a word of thanks to Kim for his work in this area.
We now have digipeaters and igates setup in the local area with more planned to be operational in the very near future. Kim operates a digi/igate from his home QTH, Lindsay VK2ALO is operating a digi from VK2RLH and I am running an igate from my QTH (hopefully soon will be a fill-in digi). Additionally there are some weather stations operating in the local area as well.
I have been playing a bit with APRS - |

Since there is an absence of a Bathurst radio club myself and VK2PWR are both members of the Orange and District Amateur Radio Club. We try and participate in as many of the club events as possible and would like to encourage all other local amateurs to do the same (even if ODARC is not your local club). I am amazed as to just how much the club has changed in the 12 months that Simon and I have been members. Simon and I have both become part of the club executive (I was roped into everyone's favourite position of Club Secretary, Simon is on the club committee)
One of the BIG events the club has been involved with lately is the Parkes Radio Telescope open day. Simon and I went over to Parkes on the Saturday with a few of the other club members and manned a stand there. We had a lot of interest from the general public and generally quite a fun day. The stand was shared with the WIA and had all sorts of "stuff" there. I would like to pass on my thanks to those parties that supported our stand. We had stuff from Icom, Kenwood, Andrews Communications, WIA, and of course stuff ODARC put together for the event. We also put together a club CD which included all sorts of info on Amateur Radio. The CDs went fairly quickly thanks to our club President Phil VK2FIL.
The club is hoping to be very much involved with some of the up and coming Contests - especially looking forward to John Moyle Field Day as the next big contest.
If you are local, or at least in the local area it would be great to hear from you. There is a link to ODARC and many other Radio Clubs (if ODARC is not local for you) in the links menu on this site. I encourage you to get in contact with the club, it is a great way to "encourage" others to be on the air, especially in those areas of Amateur Radio that you are particularly interested in. Either way I am sure the club would love to hear from you.
73 for now

Ok, the page is a few months old, but here is some evidence that the next sunspot cycle could be really really good. For everyone new to the hobby who has come in during a period of low sunspot activity, its going to make the next few years very interesting.
