Some fun to be had - Building some Yagis PDF Print E-mail

Last weekend VK2JDS, VK2FSJE and myself got stuck into some building of 2m yagi antennas for some mountain top fun (and a good excuse to drink beer and be merry). We started off the weekend by modifying a TV VHF Yagi that would make a very nice mobile antenna. After getting out some trusty reference books we got to the hacking... I mean modifying. Once we were happy that our element spacings and lengths were what they were supposed to be we did a quick test - yippee it worked :).

Next we made a start on a 6 element wide spaced 2m yagi - still a good size for roof racks on my car :). With some drilling, cutting and a few adjustments it was to the test stage (this of course took many beers - so longer than the drive out to Bluey's). With a smile on our faces from the sense of achievement we headed for the mountain top to see what we could find.

A quick little test proved that the yagis were working very well indeed. We were able to jump on to quite a few repeaters and have a good chat. And from what we were told by some of the people we chatted with it sounded like we were able to key up some of the repeaters we didn't hear back :)

Some photos and dimensions of the yagis will come soon - just a matter of measuring again (or if vk2jds still has our pieces of paper hint hint), and obviously taking some nice pics of them.

 I would like to thank Bluey for his time and hospitality during the weekend, it is always a pleasure to go out to his place to play radios :). Thanks to PJ - VK2XPH for some delightful brews, and an obvious thanks to our other halves for their patience whilst we played :)

 <more to come - beer o'clock>
